2028-2029 Midcycle Assurance Review

The University of Kansas is preparing for its Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Mid-Cycle Assurance Review in AY 2028-2029, an important component of the university’s ongoing institutional accreditation. The HLC is an accrediting organization that evaluates institutions of higher education to ensure they uphold standards related to educational quality, institutional effectiveness, and mission-driven work. 

You may be thinking, “Didn’t KU just have a HLC visit?” Indeed, we did. In March 2025, a peer review team visited which resulted in HLC reaffirming KU’s accreditation. That kicked off the next ten-year cycle for accreditation which began last year (AY 2025-2026) and requires KU to submit a Mid-Cycle Assurance Review in AY 2028-2029.

The Mid-Cycle Assurance Review is an extensive evaluation that assesses how effectively KU meets the HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation and Assumed Practices. The review encompasses all campuses and considers a wide range of institutional functions, including academic offerings, student support, governance, financial and human resources. The process is designed to focus on the university’s commitment to continuous improvement efforts.

Preparing for the review requires engagement from faculty, staff, students, and administrators on each campus. Together, these groups gather evidence, examine institutional practices, and identify areas of success as well as opportunities for future enhancement. The process not only supports KU’s accreditation status but also provides a valuable opportunity to showcase the many ways the university advances its mission, including research and creative works, student outcomes, and the quality of our programs and services.
